Tim Clark's birthday treble at Rosehill

Tim Clark marked his birthday with a successful riding treble at Rosehill, taking an early advantage in the Sydney jockeys' premiership.

His earlier wins aboard Funshow and Steel Strike set the stage for a polished performance guiding Carbonados to victory in the NSW Jockeys Association Handicap (1300m).

Clark had to maintain patience in the run, finding himself momentarily blocked by horses ahead before identifying a clear path in the straight.

"Carbonados travelled up well," Clark said. "But then coming into the straight I had to figure out how well the horse (Gatsby's) was going outside the leader. It looked like the leader was going better so I was happy to stay where I was. I had the horse to make a run when the slightest of gaps appeared and he was able to push his way through and won well."

Once the gap presented itself, the $15 outsider surged through to defeat the fast-finishing Althoff ($9.50) by 1ΒΌ lengths, with the $4.60 favourite Fire Star securing third place.

The win was a significant turnaround for Carbonados, who had finished behind all but one runner in his prior three starts.

"Carbonados has been a little hit and miss and hard to catch but the switching of states, changing things up for him worked well," Clark added.

Carbonados, trained at Flemington by Ben, Will and JD Hayes, now boasts seven wins from 22 starts, accumulating close to $400,000 in career earnings.

The Lindsay Park stable enjoyed a productive outing at Rosehill, also celebrating a win with Run Harry Run earlier in the day, contributing to their stable's double.

These results see Team Hayes sharing the lead in the nascent Sydney trainers' premiership with Richard and Will Freedman, whose entries Attractiveness and Horizons were also victorious on the season's opening day.

Defending champion trainer Chris Waller, meanwhile, had an uncommon winless Saturday at his home track as he commences the defence of his 17th consecutive Sydney trainers' premiership.
