Waller's colt Somethings Burnin' targets Flemington success
Trainer Chris Waller boasts an impressive collection of talented colts in his stable.
While four of these colts are set to compete in the Run To The Rose at Rosehill this Saturday, his three-year-old colt team is dispersed across Flemington's offerings, including the Poseidon Stakes (1100m) and the Michael Moroney (1400m).
The colt Somethings Burnin' is entered for the latter, a race that Waller believes could potentially lead to the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10.
This three-year-old secured a maiden win at Sandown over 1200m when resuming on August 19. He subsequently returned to the same track on September 2, finishing second in a competitive field of five.
Waller described the colt's last start as a difficult watch.
"Blake (Shinn) said he was a bit keen and thought he would take him down behind the other runners and it might shut him down a touch," Waller said.
"If he stayed out behind the other runners, he might have got a bit free and as soon as he got down there, he was snookered.
"He was travelling a bit too well to come back behind the heels and come around.
"It wasn't easy watching it, but when he explained it to me, I was comfortable."
The Michael Moroney Stakes has previously been claimed by a future Caulfield Guineas victor, with Griff winning in 2024. Waller acknowledged that Somethings Burnin' remains a contender for the stallion-making contest next month.
"He could be," Waller confirmed.
"I was thinking he didn't have too hard a run last time, so he can back up here on the nice big track, whereas he could go to Caulfield and have another bad luck story."
Godolphin's colt Diameter will also contest the race on Saturday, making his second start after finishing third over 1300m at Rosehill last month.
Ben Melham is booked to ride Somethings Burnin', while Sydney-based Jason Collett will partner Diameter.
