Jack Bruce finds Canadian Fling a pleasant surprise

Jack Bruce received a welcome surprise when Canadian Fling, a horse he initially found somewhat disappointing in her trials, went on to win at Gold Coast three weeks ago.

The upcoming Thursday meeting at Ipswich will see Canadian Fling as a popular contender in the Gibson Architects Benchmark 58 Handicap, a 1700-metre race where the entire circuit's rail will be positioned nine metres out.

"She's done a good job," Bruce stated.

"I thought her initial trial for me was a little disappointing but as she has done more work, she has steadily kept improving. I gave her three trials before going to Gold Coast and I probably thought she needed a run on that occasion, but she was too good (over 1400m). On the back of that I thought the rise in distance would suit so hence we are going to 1700."

Previously trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the six-year-old mare transferred to Bruce's stable several months prior. Contrary to the usual racing style of horses from that stable, Canadian Fling did not lead but instead settled towards the rear.

This positioning, however, was not a pre-planned tactic.

"I am happy to let horses find their feet and if she skipped out of the gates then fine, but she settled back and come home well so I was happy with that. I showed she had another string to her bow."

Canadian Fling is currently the market favourite at $2.50 on Wednesday.
