Gai Waterhouse slams potential Sandown sale

In a vehement critique of the potential sale of Sandown Racecourse, legendary horse trainer Gai Waterhouse has labelled the action a “disgrace” emphasising the peril of disposing of key racing assets.

Waterhouse, renowned for her insightful perspectives on the racing industry, asserted, “You shouldn’t be selling your core assets. I think it’s a disgrace. You cannot get those racetracks back.”

Her remarks highlight the significant role these venues play not only in the sport but also as communal green spaces, warning of the inevitable loss of punters and vital industry revenue.

Waterhouse’s passionate stance was echoed in her advice to the Australian Turf Club regarding its consideration to sell another iconic venue, Rosehill, stating they should be “ashamed.”

This unfolding controversy has garnered support from fellow trainer Peter Moody, who nostalgically referenced the track’s historic moments.

Amidst growing concern, an MRC spokesperson reassured that any decision would prioritise the “best interests of Victorian racing,” signalling an ongoing debate within the community.
