Repossession too good in the 2025 Beaufine Stakes
Repossession confirmed his rising status with a gritty win in the Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Pinjarra on Saturday, overcoming a week of uncertainty to extend his winning streak to three.
The Chris and Michael Gangemi-trained gelding thrived once again down the Pinjarra straight, despite having missed a planned run just seven days earlier due to a painful foot abscess. The setback left the stable unsure whether he would be fit enough to run, but the talented four-year-old responded in style.
“He’s a good horse,” said Chris Gangemi.
“I haven’t had one this good for a long time.
“He’s dealt with some crap in the last week.
“Even once the abscess blew out, he was still pretty sore on his heel.
“For him to deal with that, miss some work, his heel a bit tender, and still win, he’s a really exciting horse.
“I was sort of 50-50 whether to start him or not, and even to gallop him on the Tuesday, but I’m glad we did now.
“He’ll go to the paddock now.”
Repossession’s Beaufine victory was Gangemi’s third in the race, following earlier wins with Durendal in 2018 and Rock Magic in 2015. And while some may be quick to draw comparisons between Repossession and the beloved Rock Magic, Gangemi says it’s too early for that.
“You should never compare him to Rock Magic,” he said.
“He has a long, long, long way to go to be half as good as him.
“But he’s definitely the smartest young horse we’ve probably ever had.
“I think that’s just the start of a very good career hopefully.”
Purchased for $62,500 as a yearling, Repossession has now earned close to $500,000 from just seven starts, with five wins already to his name and his first black-type win now on the record.
Brad Parnham, who made the weight to ride Repossession at 54kg, capped off the day with a double after also booting home Timeless Gem. That winner was trained by Stephen Miller, who also saddled Beaufine runner-up Toropa. Meanwhile, the Gangemis’ other runner, Phanta, finished seventh.
