Mr consistency heads to the 2026 Ballarat Cup

Ocean Beyond might not always warm the hearts of punters, but he remains an exceptionally consistent earner for his connections.
The Simon Ryan-trained gelding will attempt to secure his biggest payday yet when he contests the $500,000 Listed Ballarat Cup (2000m) on Saturday, entering the race with more than $535,000 already in the bank.
The eight-year-old has not won since May 2022 when he captured the Listed Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington.
He spent the early part of his career with Daniel Bowman before transferring to Andrew Bobbin, eventually joining Ryan’s Warrnambool stable last year.
Ocean Beyond has yet to win in 24 appearances for Ryan, but six placings and several strong efforts have delivered over $135,000 in prizemoney.
“When he came to my stable, he was on the verge of retirement,” Ryan said.
“He hadn’t been doing much, but as he’s aged, he’s stretched out in distance and sort of reinvented himself.”
Ryan admits it can be frustrating at times in a small yard, but Ocean Beyond remains a valuable and reliable performer.
“He’s probably not a punter’s favourite, but business-wise, he earns plenty for his owners and pays his way,” he said.
“We’re hoping one day everything goes right and he gets his big race.”
The gelding races on a quick turnaround after finishing behind Casino Seventeen and Rumbled Again in last week’s Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m), where he collected $18,000.
“His best runs for me have been on the quick back-up,” Ryan said.
“I’m confident he can match last week’s effort or improve on it.”
Ryan believes 2000 metres is about his upper limit but expects him to stay the journey following his strong 1800m showing.
Ocean Beyond has also thrived off a varied campaign that includes swimming, pony club outings, and light work at Warrnambool.
“He’s very straightforward — he eats, he’s sound, he enjoys his job — but his racing style makes it hard to win many races,” Ryan said.
“He gets back and rattles home, but he’ll present in terrific order for this.”
“It’s probably the best race he’s contested, but his form says he deserves his chance.”
