Begg keeping an eye on the weather for Biologics

Grahame Begg noted that while Biologics finished second-last, almost ten lengths behind the winner, at her last run, it wasn't an entirely fruitless outing.

The Cranbourne trainer confirmed that the three-year-old I Am Invincible filly does not perform well on Heavy tracks, a conclusion drawn from her most recent effort.

The filly, owned by Pinecliff Racing, experienced her first start on a track rated worse than Good at Flemington on June 6 over 1200 metres. She has been nominated for Saturday's 1200m 3YO fillies handicap at Caulfield, but her participation is contingent on the weather conditions.

"She was going really well into the race and we thought she'd run really well, but the unknown was the ground," Begg explained.

"Obviously they got rain on the day of the race and it deteriorated and she just wasn't comfortable at all."

"She's nominated, so we'll see what happens and what the week brings."

As of Monday, the Caulfield track was rated a Soft 7, but with little rain anticipated in Melbourne this week, it is expected to improve by race day.

Biologics would be making her third appearance if she races. Her disappointing Flemington run followed a dominant first-up victory over 1100m in a fillies and mares benchmark 62 event at Werribee.

This win came after a couple of unplaced efforts in Stakes grade against her own sex last spring. Her debut run resulted in a win in a Pakenham maiden.

While Begg hasn't committed Biologics to a start, one of his other fillies, Takeko, is set to compete.

The lightly-raced five-year-old mare is aiming to build on her strong first-up record in the $150,000 fillies and mares BM84 over 1100 metres.

Her first-up record boasts two wins and a second from three starts. The daughter of Saxon Warrior gave a hint of another good fresh run with a second placing in a recent Pakenham jumpout.

Luke Cartwright, who claims 1.5kg, rode Takeko in that jumpout and will partner her again on Saturday. Begg is enthusiastic about seeing the mare race for the first time since her win at Moonee Valley on August 9.

"She's a progressive mare, she's coming off a bit of a layoff but she's going well and she'll come in very well at the weights after the claim," Begg said.

The racing betting markets for Takeko's return are likely to be active. Check out the top online bookmakers for the best odds.
