Thornton backing Run Lucy Run for Ipswich repeat

Trainer Glenn Thornton is aware of Run Lucy Run's capabilities, but unlocking her top form requires a patient approach that he believes will ultimately prove fruitful.
Having shifted from Victoria to the Gold Coast, the handler is developing his 12-strong 2026 string, and Run Lucy Run seeks to capitalise on her previous victory at Ipswich in the Gordon's Gin Class 4 Handicap (1350m) held on Friday.
This four-year-old mare triumphed at the same track and trip on January 31, with conditions expected to rate good and play to her strengths.
The win halted a string of unplaced efforts dating back to December 2024.
"She's done really well since and there is no reason why she can't go well again," Thornton said.
"She typically sharpens up during her preparations and maintains progress.
"Last time, if we couldn't win we were in a bit of trouble.
She opened at $3.40 across bookmakers early on, but odds have tightened to $2.50 after the late scratching of frontrunner Noble Decree Thursday afternoon.
Two further withdrawals have improved her draw from post 11 to barrier eight.
"She's performed in better class races than this," Thornton added.
"If she's getting closer to where she was as a three-year-old then she'll run well.
Five years into his Queensland residency, Thornton joined his children Damien (aboard Run Lucy Run), Boris, and Stephanie in the warmer climate and remains content with the decision.
While aspiring for Run Lucy Run to reclaim city grade status, he's content with interim success at Ipswich.
"We were happy to go back to Ipswich knowing it was a good surface and, unless they get rain on the day, they usually dish up a reliable track.
